From the Earth Rise Radiant Beings

2019-2024
Figures from historic Orientalist Paintings created from the western imagination reject their sexualized and submissive gestures. Recast in palest yellow and other hues, the roughly textured silhouettes are given agency. Weaponized and engaging in acts of self-love, they are bound with figures Truong has painted from photos of women in her family. Specific painted landscapes cite the passing and passage of geographical home. Hand painted silk and oil gestures adorned with painted and printed historic designs bind familial narrative to the histories of war and colonialism, myth and symbology, and spirituality. Anamorphic bodies appear in flux, cradling resistance, love and strength passed between generations, born into a kind of Asian futurism.
